When I was just a young boy I can fondly remember sitting on an antique barber chair at the community barber shop and watching my father getting a haircut and shave. It is not anything like what it is in our day. There was an knack to it. The barber really appreciated what he was doing and it was obvious that my father enjoyed it. Not only that, but the barber shop was where gentlemen could hang out amongst themselves.

The haircuts were at all times so precise. My dad would be sitting in one of the countless used barber chairs as the barber would deliberately take his time to give the flawless cut. Nearly all men kept their hair short as that was the way back then. Following the hair cut was a shave. This was not a shave as we see today, with foam from a can and a molded disposable razor. Rather, the lather was applied with a brush and a straight blade razor was chosen. It looks intimidating, but it is the cleanest shave you can ever obtain. After the shave was the hot towel that every time felt so pleasant.

The men would mostly talk about football or local politics, though the subject of women would come up a great deal. It was a time to be at ease and get to know each of us a bit better. Today, when you get a haircut the chatter is kept to a minimum and you often attempt to get out as soon as possible.

As I saunter by the local barber shop and spot the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I question why this practice has mostly vanished from our customs. Do people not appreciate a decent hair cut and shave anymore? Have we all become so anti-social that spending an some time being friendly with our friends and neighbors seems like a difficult task? While I am not one to be cynical and only long for for "how things were", I do desire that humanity will keep in mind and respect the way it was just a few years ago.
